The big names of world tennis will all be present at this year’s Internazionali BNL d'Italia, which is now of course a combined event running from 7 – 15 May on the clay courts of the Foro Italico in Rome. 18 of the top 20 in the WTA ranking (and indeed 33 of the top 35) will be there for the women’s event, with only Russia’s Vera Zvonareva (3) and Czech Petra Kvitova (18) having pulled out. It will also mark the return to Rome of Kim Clijsters for the first time since 2006. The Belgian won at the Internazionali in 2003, beating Amelie Mauresmo in the final, one year after she had
fallen at the final hurdle against fellow countrywoman Justine Henin. Both Venus and Serena Williams are on the entry list, despite the latter having been kept off the courts due to injuries
since winning Wimbledon last July. Four Italian players have secured direct acceptance, namely 2010 Roland Garros-winner Francesca Schiavone, Flavia Pennetta, Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani, as has defending champion Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez from Spain.
In the men’s draw for what will be the fifth ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season, there have
been no withdrawals at all to date. Should anyone be forced to pull out, then world No.44 Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia will be the first replacement.
No.1 Rafael Nadal will be looking to extend his record with a sixth title in Rome this year.
