Nadal and Federer in same half
Murray in with Djokovic
Victor Troicki participated in the draw for the men’s singles at this year’s Internazionali BNL d’Italia, and gave himself a potential third round tie with British No.4 seed Andy Murray. The Serb, who is seeded 15 here and enjoying his highest ATP ranking to date, kept himself out of the half of the draw containing Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, with those old rivals on course for a semi-final clash, as is the case at the current ATP Masters tournament at Madrid.
The top half of the draw also created a potential remake of last year’s final, with Nadal in the same quarter as fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, who has been one of the stars on clay so far this year. Tomas Berdych is in Federer’s quarter of the bracket and will be looking to regain some of the form that served him so well during the European clay and grass swing last year.
In the bottom half of the draw, world No.2 and Nadal’s main rival on clay Novak Djokovic finds himself in the same part of the bracket as Stanislas Wawrinka, who took the Serb to three sets in the 2008 final. After that, a potential quarter-final with two-time Roland Garros finalist Robin Soderling awaits, but only if the Swede can overcome dangerous clay-courter Nicolas Almagro in the quarters.
Murray meanwhile, who has been going through what is becoming a customary post-Australian Open, pre-Wimbledon slump, will face tough Austrian lefty Juergen Melzer if he manages to overcome Troicki, before a potential semi-final with Djokovic.
Theoretical Round of 16 clashes:
Nadal - Youzhny
Ferrer - Fish
Federer - Gasquet
Berdych - Monfils
Melzer - Roddick
Murray - Troicki
Soderling - Almagro
Djokovic - Wawrinka
