Federer v Nadal a potential semi-final clash

This content was published 7 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

Old rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal could have the chance to go head-to-head in another epic Rome battle.

Nadal won a memorable five-set contest in 2006, before the tournament reverted to best of three sets, and there is every chance they could meet again at the semi-final stage.

Federer suffered a second round exit in Madrid to Nick Kyrgios while Nadal has reached the semi-final stage of that tournament.

Top seed Novak Djokovic, like Federer, will be fresh having pulled out in Madrid and he could play Andy Murray in the last four.

Tommy Robredo has pulled out with injury while Fernando Verdasco and Milos Raonic have cited personal reasons for their withdrawals. Jiri Vesely, Dominic Thiem and Joao Sousa have all been placed in the main draw as a result.
