Monaco forced to retire in Rome

This content was published 7 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

Juan Monaco has announced he has withdrawn from the Italian Open on the day he was due to play his quarter-final match with Lucas Pouille.

The Argentine beat fourth seed Stan Wawrinka in three sets on Thursday in an outstanding display but he has cited a left hip problem as the reason.

It means Pouille is the first name through to the semi-finals and he has made the most of his lucky loser position this week. The Frenchmen was beaten in qualifying but given a place in the main draw and a bye to the second round following Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s withdrawal.
