Today, Elise Mertens was crowned new WTA World Number One in doubles and therefore received the trophy for such incredible achievement. The Belgian is the 45th woman to seat on top of the leaderboards and the second ever Belgian after Kim Clijsters.
“I am very happy to become World No.1 in doubles. It is definitely a dream come true,” said Mertens. “I would not have made it without all of the incredible partners I’ve played with, and of course my team, so I want to thank them for helping me get here. This is a moment I will cherish forever.”
The newly crowned world number one will be making her debut at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia tomorrw, when she will face Veronika Kudermetova in singles. It will take a little longer to see her partnering with Su-Wei Hsieh in doubles, as the team has a first round bye.
