ATP Final – as it happened

This content was published 11 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

1726: Thank you for your company for our live commentary of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. Ciao! 1725: Now that was quite incredible, just the ease of the win for Nadal. Federer will be extremely disappointed with the manner of this loss. 1724: Nadal serves it out to love. As comfortable a victory as he has ever had in a final. Astonishing success against his old rival. We thought it might be closer than this. 6-1, 6-3 the final score in just one hour and nine minutes.  1721: Another game for Federer as he holds to 30 and he is getting a fair bit of encouragement now. He has now avoided his heaviest ever defeat to Nadal. 5-3. 1718: But Federer has a lot of pride and keeps Rafa honest getting one of the breaks back to love. 5-2. 1714: That could well be that. A simply sensational backhand pass by Nadal makes it another break and 5-1. Rafa serving for the title. 1705: Desperation now from Federer as he his racquet comes out his hand as he tries to reach a pass at the net on game point. 4-1 now Rafa. 1700: Federer finally on the board in the second set but he’s had to really battle to win that service game. Huge cheers from the crowd when he does. 3-1 Nadal. 1654: Federer may well be having an off-day but Nadal has been simply superb. Another easy hold for 3-0. 1651: But Nadal strikes again. He takes Federer to 15-40 and then produces a brilliant backhand pass. A clench of the fist and it is 2-0. 1647: More like it from Federer who forces an immediate break point at the start of the second set. But Nadal digs deep and claims the first game for a 1-0 lead. 1639: That is the set for Nadal. It is not often you see Federer lose 6-1 but that is what happens. A poor service game and his volley at the net into the tramlines to give Rafa the set sums up the opening 24 minutes of this match. 1636: Wow! This is fine tennis from Nadal. He has raced to a 5-1 lead with a love service game the latest to his list of dominant games. 1631: Make that two breaks of serve. Awesome tennis from Nadal, his forehands giving Federer the run around and a beauty of a shot makes it 4-1. 1630: Nadal well into his stride now, that is a comfortable hold to love to go 3-1 up. 1625: Federer is broken – Nadal has the early advantage and it is 2-1 to the Spaniard. His big, booming forehands working. 1621: Bit of early danger for Nadal as Federer gets him to 30-30. But a rare Federer unforced error and a powerful serve from the Spaniard shut the door. 1-1. 1617: Federer in no mood to be messing about. Opening service game to 15. 1-0. 1615: It’ll be Roger to get us underway. He starts with an ace. 1605: A beautiful day in Rome and the players walk out in to the bright sunshine for the mouthwatering final match. 1543: I’ll start the predictions: Federer to win in three. Yes, you heard right, I think the Swiss has been playing well enough this week to make a challenge. Tweet me your thoughts to @ianbakersport. 1541: Good afternoon. Is there any better match line up than Roger Federer v Rafael Nadal? It brings back all the memories of the epic five-setter here seven years ago. We won’t get five sets today, but we might get three. Federer has not won here, Nadal has done so six times. It is their 30th ever meeting, Nadal has won 19. Which way will it go?
