ATP Sunday – as it happened

This content was published 12 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

2117: Seppi raises his game at just the right time and took the final set comfortably 6-3 in the end. No worries at all for Florian Mayer who has comfortably beaten Milos Raonic in straight sets to ensure he meets Nadal on Tuesday or Wednesday. That completes today’s matches here at the Foro Italico. Thanks for your company and I’m sure I’ll see you all again tomorrow where we will have two live blogs – giving you the action from both the men’s and women’s competitions.

2043: I may have spoken too soon on the Seppi front as Denis Istomin has turned things around in dramatic fashion on Centrale. Not only did he break the Seppi serve once but he did it again to take the set and set up a decider. Over on Supertennis Florian Mayer is a set to the good having taken the first set ‘breaker 7-5 against Milos Raonic. Remember the winner faces a certain Mr Nadal.

2006: In terms of the main draw, Sunday is getting better for Italian fans. Andreas Seppi is a set up and 2-0 ahead in the second set against Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin. By the way it’s much cooler out there than earlier.

1928: The crowd have been silenced here as Troicki has come through in the final set but the fans have another local boy starting in Andreas Seppi who takes on Denis Istomin. There is also action on Supertennis Arena with Milos Raonic up against Florian Mayer for the right to take on Rafael Nadal in the second round.

1834: Troicki has fought back to level at a set all on Centrale. A decider now against Volandri.

1750: Volandri has taken the first set against Troicki. Italian fans are sensing another win to make it a good day. Meanwhile tomorrow’s order of play is in. Here are the highlights:

1649: Next up in the men’s first round is another Italian wild card Filippo Volandri against Serbian Viktor Troicki. Volandri actually won on the only meeting between the two in San Marino four years ago. Unfortunately the sunshine appears to have gone and we now have cloud at Foro Italico.

1628: Lorenzi’s done it. Joy for Italy. He’s taken the decider 6-3 after Davydenko appeared to have avoided the danger in the second. A notable win for the veteran Rome-born man who came close to knocking out Rafa Nadal here last year. A former medical student, Lorenzi has prescribed a bit of a lesson to his more well known opponent.

1536: A much better second set for Davydenko who broke at 3-2 and then with Lorenzi serving to stay in the set.  One apiece and we now have a decider.

1515: We have a potential shock on the cards. Paolo Lorenzi has grabbed the first set against Nikolay Davydenko. The Italian was a break down but came back to delight his home fans.

1413: It’s not been the best couple of years for Davydenko who was once World No.3 and it’s a difficult match-up against Paolo Lorenzi, ranked 78th in the world, especially with the home crowd right behind their man. This is also the first meeting between the pair.

1403: A bit of a wobble towards the end for Ferrero but the former World No.1 is through to the second round. He was pegged by Anderson to 5-5 but took the next two games to set up a tie with Alex Bogomolov Jr or 13th seed Gael Monfils. Next up on Campo Centrale is the first Italian in the main draw. Can Paolo Lorenzi, a wild card, pull off an upset against Russian Nikolay Davydenko?

1329: The King of Spain, that’s Juan Carlos or Mr Ferrero to you and me, looks like he’ll be our first man into the second round. He took that first set against Kevin Anderson and now leads 3-2 with a break.

1248: hello, ciao, welcome to our live blog on the Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2012. I’m Ian Baker and you can send me your comments, questions or queries on Twitter @ianbakersport.

The first thing to say is it is hot, very hot. It is in excess of 30 degrees, players will need to take on a lot of water today and indeed for much of the tournament if it stays like this.

We have six first round men’s matches to bring you today. The women’s section starts tomorrow. First up is Kevin Anderson of South Africa against Juan Carlos Ferrero. The pair have never met before. It’s been a tough start to the year for Ferrero who has won just one match but he is currently serving for the first set at 5-4 against Anderson who won at Delray Beach earlier in the year.

Later in the day we have Nikolay Davydenko v wild card Paolo Lorenzi, Viktor Troicki against another wild card Filippo Volandri, Andreas Seppi v Denis Istomin and Milos Raonic v Florian Mayer for the right to play Rafael Nadal. An intriguing start to proceedings.
