ATP Thursday – as it happened

2231: That will be it as far as live text commentary is concerned tonight. Thanks for your company today and join us again from tomorrow lunchtime where we will bring you coverage of all four quarter-final matches. Ciao and goodnight! 2229: Cool as you like Federer rounds things off to love with an ace at match point. An hour and three minutes, 6-1, 6-2. He will play Jerzy Janowicz tomorrow in the quarter-finals. 2227: Simon is fighting desperately in the second set but Federer is just grinding him down. He eventually earns a double break, Fed to serve for the match at 5-2. 2158: It would appear as if Roger Federer is in a hurry to make the last flight back to Switzerland for the night. 2-0 he leads in the second set. Totally dominant so far. 2150: That’s about as convincing a first set as you would expect from Federer. 24 minutes, 6-1. Complete dominance. 2138: Janowicz has won the final set 6-4 to continue his memorable Internazionali BNL d’Italia campaign. He will play the winner of Simon v Federer in the quarters. Federer has just broken for a 3-1 lead incidentally.  2117: Federer v Simon will be the last match of the night on Centrale. Perhaps surprisingly the pair are level 2-2 on the head-to-head. Janowicz continues on his merry way. It’s 4-2 in the final set against Gasquet. 2104: Janowicz is gaining plenty of followers of late and they will be delighted with his turnaround here. 2-0 he leads in the second set having just got the break of serve. 2049: The tiebreak goes to Janowicz and it is a fairly comprehensive one at that. 7-2 and we will now have a final set. The Pole has been most impressive in this year’s tournament. 2044: Tiebreak time on Supertennis between Gasquet and Janowicz. 2034: Gasquet has broken back and the second set appears to be going right to the wire. It is 5-5 now. 2013: Janowicz raises his game at the start of the second set and he is now ahead 3-1 in the second set. 1948: Gasquet the first to break as he wins the next game and then he closes out the first set 6-3 with the next. 1938: Competitive stuff between Janowicz and Gasquet this far. Gasquet has the 4-3 advantage but we remain on serve. 1909: Victory for Marcel Granollers who has beaten Jeremy Chardy 7-5 in the final set of a competitively fought, tense tussle, although a double fault for Chardy on match point was not the best way to finish the match. Granollers will face another unseeded player in Benoit Paire in quarter-final action tomorrow. More action about to begin on Supertennis. Can Jerzy Janowicz continue his fine tournament to date? The Pole plays ninth seed Richard Gasquet who comfortably beat him earlier this year in Indian Wells. 1832: Finally, finally Nadal breaks Gulbis down claiming it 6-4 in the final set. His exuberant celebrations tell its own story. He knows he was severely tested today and came through it. Cracking match and Nadal will now have a re-match of last week’s Madrid quarters with fellow Spaniard David Ferrer tomorrow. Over on Pietrangeli, Chardy won the second set against Granollers and is now 3-1 up in the final set. 1814: But no! Gulbis come storming back yet again for 3-4, he has got second wind. Sensational match. 1811: That may be the decisive blow. Nadal breaks for a 4-2 lead and that could be the moment he can look forward to completing arguably his most difficult match since his return earlier in the year. 1807: Granollers has won the first set against Chardy 6-4 but quite a turnaround in the second set as Chardy races to a 4-0 lead with two breaks of serve. Shaping up for an exciting finish on Centrale with Gulbis 2-3 against Nadal with serve in the final set. 1738: Gulbis’ iron-like resistance is broken. Nadal breaks him to snatch the second set 7-5 and you feel as if they might swing the momentum now. Some news to tell you Philipp Kohlschreiber has withdrawn from the tournament after complaining of dizziness so David Ferrer will get a bye to the quarter-finals where he will play Nadal or Gulbis. 1729: Impressive stuff from Gulbis, very impressive. He recovers from 0-40, saving three set pieces with some precise hitting and powerful serving. 5-5. 1722: Extraordinary. Gulbis has the crowd on his side as he immediately breaks straight back. 4-5, second set. 1717: This has turned into a stunning exhibition of tennis but Nadal has got the break, crucially to lead 5-3. 1653: 2-2 in the second set, but Nadal’s serve not firing. What has he got? 1630: Gulbis has now won four sets in six meetings with Nadal. He also won one when the pair met here in Rome in 2010. 1629: That will be the set for Gulbis winning it with an ace. 6-1. Unexpected, amazing, exciting.  1622: Mamma mia! This is extraordinary. Gulbis has raced to a 5-0 lead, that is 5-0 over Nadal. Two breaks of serve in just 19 minutes. Nadal already in huge trouble. What a simply stunning start from the Latvian qualifier. 1606: Del Potro is out! A fine win for Frenchman Paire who takes the second set tiebreak. An incredible 38 winners from Paire in that match and he will now face Jeremy Chardy or Marcel Granollers in the quarters. 1535: Shock on the cards as Del Potro is in a little bit of trouble. Paire, playing for the very first time here in Rome this year, has taken the first set 6-4 and it is 3-3 in the second set. Next up on Centrale will be Rafa Nadal v Ernests Gulbis. Qualifier Gulbis has had an excellent week here but overturning a 5-0 record in the head-to-head will surely be one step too far won’t it? 1503: Del Potro has broken back and it is now 4-4. 1452: Early break for Paire as the action begins on Supertennis, he leads Del Potro 3-2. 1412: Berdych is into the quarters where he’ll meet Djokovic. 7-5, 6-2 he takes his match with Anderson. The second set was considerably more convincing than the first. No men’s matches currently being played but Del Potro v Paire is next up on Supertennis. 1404: Berdych has one foot in the quarter-finals after claiming a break in the second set to lead Anderson 4-2. 1349: Delight for Djokovic. He has won without really breaking sweat for the second match running. Dolgopolov no match for him. 6-1, 6-4 is the scoreline after just one hour and one minute on Centrale. Djokovic will play Kevin Anderson or Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals. 1340: Berdych picks the right time to break the Anderson serve, taking advantage of 5-6, 30-30, to take a one set lead on Supertennis. 1338: A bit of a contest for the first time as Dolgopolov excites the crowd for the first time getting a couple of break points on the Nole serve. But he is furious with himself as he fails to take advantage and Djokovic has 4-2. 1327: Not surprisingly Djokovic leads 2-0 in the head-to-head with Dolgopolov and not surprisingly at all he has simply cruised to the first set 6-1. He has also immediately broken at the start of the second set and is closing in on becoming the first man into the quarter-finals with a 3-1 second set lead. It is a bit closer on Supertennis Kevin Anderson initially had the break against Tomas Berdych but the Czech has pegged him back and now leads 5-4 on serve. 1253: Good afternoon and welcome to men’s 3rd round day here at the Foro Italico. Rain has disappeared at last so we can have some play. We have two games that have just got underway. Novak Djokovic v Alexandr Dolgopolov and Kevin Anderson v Tomas Berdych. As ever please let’s us have your tweets, predictions and comments to @ianbakersport.
