2115: That’s the end of our men’s coverage today, we will be back in the morning with more from Foro Italico. In the meantime you can enjoy our women’s coverage. Ciao! 2113: It is the bagel for Berdych. 6-4, 6-0 he has beaten Istomin by to ensure his Kevin Anderson.  2108: Berd is flying! (sorry). He has broken the Istomin serve again and now leads 5-0 in the second set. 2058: There’s an early break for Berdych in the second set and he is now heading towards the third round at 2-0. 2050: One more men’s match out on court this evening and it is Tomas Berdych against Denis Istomin. Berdych has just taken the first set 6-4 on Supertennis. 2030: That’ll be game, set and match to Federer in just 51 minutes, 6-1, 6-2, that is the quickest match of the tournament so far. Mikhail Youzhny or Gilles Simon will be next up for Fed on Thursday. 2028: Make that 5-2 to Federer with a second break. A really outstanding display tonight. Starace has battled hard this set but he really does not know what has hit him. 2014: Victory for Del Potro, comfortably 6-3, 6-2 against Kuznetsov and that sets up a third round for him against a Frenchman either Paire or Benneateau. One other match out on court, Istomin is 1-2 against Berdych with serve so far on Supertennis. 3-1 Federer, a man at work. 2009: Some gritty play by Starace but Federer is too good in the opening game of the second set, breaking and that included some impressive play at the net. It would appear as if Roger has a clay court etiquette all of his own. 1959: Starace nearly forced a break back there but Federer closes out the set 6-1 in just 20 minutes. 1955: It is now 5-1 after just 15 minutes, incredible tennis from Federer who means busy this evening. He will serve for a blink and you’ll miss it first set. Meanwhile Del Potro took the first set against Kuznetsov and now has 2-1 and a break in the second. 1948: Sublime tennis from Roger, he is moving poor Potito from one side of the court to the other. He breaks him to love, 3-1 after just eight minutes. 1944: It is going with serve so far on Centrale. 2-1 to Federer, sporting a very smart shorter haircut. 1922: Action is about to begin again on Centrale shortly. Roger Federer will be making his first appearance in this year’s competiton when he takes on Italian wildcard Potito Starace, who enjoyed an excellent win over Radek Stepanek in the first round. Federer has won all six meetings, losing just one set in the process. It’s been a fine start for Juan Martin Del Potro in his match againsyt Andrey Kuznetsov, racing to a 4-1 lead. 1901: Another seed has gone in the shape of Marin Cilic who has succumbed 6-3, 7-6 to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, who will play Denis Istomin or Tomas Bedych in the third round. That match will begin later this evening on Supertennis. Another second round match between Juan Martin Del Potro and Andrey Kuznetsov, the qualifier, has just started on Pietrangeli. 1814: Victory for Djokovic in one hour and 10 minutes, 6-2, 6-3. He raises his arms aloft, he is delighted with that performance and as well he might be. Great start for the 2008 and 2011 winner, who is through to the third round. He will play either Alexandr Dolgopolov or the winner of Carlos Berlocq v Stan Wawrinka. The latter has a 3-2 final set advantage in that match. 1801: Montanes is on the board in the second set. Sadly for him, Djokovic now has four to his name. I don’t think this will take too much longer at this rate. 1757: More men’s latest to tell you about: Kevin Anderson has won the first set 6-3 against 11th seed Marin Cilic while Carlos Berlocq and Stan Wawrinka are now level at one set all after the latter fought back in the second set. 1753: It’s looking all too predictable now. Seven straight games for Nole as he leads 2-0 in the second set and the class is telling now. 1742: Montanes simply cannot cope with the pace and accuracy on Djokovic’s return. The No.1 seed takes his first set point at 15-40 on the Spaniard’s serve. After a less than convincing start, that set quickly became a rout. Djokovic in total control now. 1739: Nole into his stride now. He breaks Montanes for 4-2 and is dominating the match now with some big-hitting from the back of the court. A convincing service game makes it 5-2 and Montanes will now serve to stay in the first set. 1730: Djokovic breaks back for 2-2, impressive standard early on with plenty of long rallies. Will the early scare wake Nole up though? 1723: Early struggles for Djokovic who has now been broken in his second service game. Not the start he will have wanted here in Rome. 2-1 Montanes. 1714: Slow start for Nole, having to survive a break point to take the first game.  1651: Now it’s time to get ready to see the No.1 seed for the first time this year in Rome. Novak Djokovic is next on court against qualifier Albert Montanes. It’s no surprise to learn that the Serb has won all four previous meetings, including a straight sets triumph at Wimbledon 2010. I’d be very surprised if it is not straight sets again today. 1629: Gasquet claimed the first set 6-4 and it is looking fairly straightforward for him now. He has broken in the second set and leads 4-2. Early break too for qualifier Carlos Berlocq in his match with Stan Wawrinka, 2-0 the lead. 1600: Troicki has triumphed! He’s recovered from a poor first set to beat lucky loser Lukas Rosol and will play Ernests Gulbis in the second round. 1538: Perfect start for Gasquet who has come straight out of the blocks to take a 2-0 lead. 1528: We have our first men’s second round match about to begin on Centrale. Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Marcos Baghdatis on his first game in the main draw here on Sunday, will take on Richard Gasquet, the ninth seed and a man that has beaten him on all three occasions the pair have met. Troicki has taken the second set 6-1 to square up against Lukas Rosol. 1511: A closely fought final set on Supertennis but Italian dreams have ended for Volandri as Simon takes it 6-4 to set up a second round tie with Mikhail Youzhny. 1441: The second round is nearly complete after Julien Benneteau knocks out 12th seed Nicolas Almagro with a 7-6, 6-4 triumph. Benneteau will take on compatriot Benoit Paire in the second round. 1437: Lucky loser Lukas Rosol could be very lucky indeed. He has taken the first set 6-3 over Viktor Troicki and will now hope for the unexpected bonus of a second round place. 1426: Volandri wins the second set comfortably in the end 6-2 and we will have a decider on Supertennis. 1407: Volandi has struck back in the second set against Simon for a 3-1 lead. Julien Benneteau has taken a first set tiebreaker 7-2 against Spanish 12th seed Nicolas Almagro. 1347: Chardy has knocked out Lopez winning a final set tiebreaker 7-4. The Frenchman will take on Kei Nishikori, who beat Paolo Lorenzi last night, in the next round. 1341: Simple Simon (sorry). Gilles eases to a first set lead against Volandri winning it 6-3.  1335: It was a decent start for Volandri against Simon with an early break. But the Frenchman already appears to be too strong, and now leads 5-2 on the first set. 1258: Verdasco has overcome a wobble to triumph 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 against Zeballos. The Spaniard will now face David Ferrer in the second round. 1251: Chardy levels up by winning the second set 7-5 against Lopez. A decider there. 1236: Youzhny has completed a victory over Haas, the 13th seed, 6-4, 6-3 and will now face the winner of the next match on Supert
ennis between Filippo Volandri and Gilles Simon in the second round. Zeballos has levelled at one set all against Verdasco. 1213: Haas is in big trouble as he is broken early at the start of the second set. 2-1 to Youzhny. 1157: Already it has been a busy morning and three first sets have been completed in the men’s matches we have going on. Tommy Haas, who is tied with Mikhail Youzhny in the head-to-head, is in trouble going down 6-4 to the Russian. It is joy for Spain so far with both Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez winning their first sets 6-3 against Horacio Zeballos and Jeremy Chardy respectively. 1145: Good morning and welcome to the third day of men’s action at Foro Italico. It’s the day where Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic play for the very first time in the tournament and we will hear more about them earlier in the day. As ever please tweet me your comments and predictions to @ianbakersport.
