ATP Wednesday – as it happened

This content was published 12 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

2108: Rafa’s always been in control of this match despite not getting out of second gear in the second set. He snatches a break from 5-5 and despite Mayer forcing 0-30, Nadal sees it out. The Spaniard is looking in ominous form already and will face Marcel Granollers, his countryman, in Thursday’s third round. Rafa is not the only man in a hurry. Stan Wawrinka has achieved a fine win against Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-1 that finished to complete the day’s action in the men’s tournament at Foro Italico. It’s been an action packed day and we will have a full programme of third round matches tomorrow. If you’re not joining us for the WTA action later, thanks for your company and see you again tomorrow. Ciao.

2041: The second set is much more of a grind for Rafa. 3-3 as Mayer battles hard to keep up with the Spaniard. Stan Wawrinka took the first set 6-3 in the end against Tipsarevic.

2013: Blink and you’d miss that. Nadal has gone through Florian Mayer as if he was not there. 6-1 he has taken the first set in just 26 minutes. In a hurry. Good start for Stan Wawrinka. He has broken Tipsarevic to lead 4-1 now.

1934: Seppi does close things out. He has delighted with that win and so he should. The crowd are ecstatic as their man keeps Italian hopes alive in the men’s section of the draw. Seppi will take on the winner of Stan Wawrinka and Janko Tipsarevic, next on Supertennis Arena.

1928: Seppi has broken the Isner serve! A pump of the fist and the Italian will now serve for the match at 6-5. Over on Centrale, it’s Rafa time. The only time they have met on the ATP Tour (in Shanghai last year), Florian Mayer claimed a shock win. There can’t be another surprise tonight can there?

1920: Things are hotting up on Pietrangeli. The old warhorse John Isner, complete with blistered hand, is face Andreas Seppi (and the crowd!) in a final set decider. 5-4 to the American with serve and we have an exciting finish ahead.

1825: It looks like it is going to be another long match for John Isner. He’s now lost the second set, 7-5 on a tiebreak to Andreas Seppi to the delight of the home crowd. That’s the only men’s match on right now.

1715: It was a tough evening for John Isner in Monday’s first round against Philipp Kohlschreiber but the big American seems to have found some form. He has looked far more convincing to take the first set 6-2 against Italy’s Andreas Seppi. Elsewhere Richard Gasquet is looking to knock another Italian out in the shape of Paolo Lorenzi. A set and 5-1 the Frenchman leads.

1627: An easy second set for Berdych who has beaten Kubot 6-4, 6-1. Early advantage for Gasquet against Italian wild card Paolo Lorenzi. The Frenchman is 4-1 to the good.

1552: Nicolas Almagro has beaten Sam Querry 7-5, 6-2 to end the qualifier’s promising week. Tomas Berdych has won the first set against Lukasz Kubot 6-4.

1513: Federer breaks at 4-4 and then closes out the match. The Swiss is enjoying coming to the net on occasions. He has done what he had to today. A fairly clinical 6-3, 6-4 win sets up a third round meeting with Juan Carlos Ferrero. Del Potro meanwhile is winning by a set and now 3-0 against Youzhny. First set to Almagro 7-5 against Quarrey.

1459: Federer breaks for a 3-2 lead but is then immediately broken straight back by a fighting Berlocq, the serve and volley on break point not working for the Swiss. DelPo has taken the first set against Youzhny.

1452: Early breaks in other matches. 4-2 Almagro. 3-1 Simon. Not all Federer’s own way in the second set, it is 2-2 so far.

1433: Beclocq came back into the match a little, even forcing a break back point, but Federer was too strong to close out the first set 6-3 in 28 minutes. Early advantage for DelPo 3-2 with the break against Youzhny.

1413: Lightning start for Roger and he is continuing where he left off in Madrid. He’s raced to a 3-0 lead early on. Meanwhile Juan Monaco has completed his straight sets win over Radek Stepanek. The easy task of Novak Djokovic next!

1357: At last! Time for a bit of Roger. Fed about to arrive on Centrale fresh from his Madrid exertions. He plays Argentine Carlos Berlocq, first meeting between the two this.  Also in action Juan Martin Del Potro against Mikhail Youzhny. DelPo won in straight sets when the two met in Madrid and difficult to see anything other than a similar result especially as the Argentine has a 3-0 overall lead in the head-to-head.

1345: Look away now Italian fans. Fabio Fognini is out of his home tournament, losing 6-3, 6-4 to Marcel Gronollers. The Spaniard in the end too strong and he could face his countryman Rafael Nadal next. Remember Nadal is in action today against Florian Mayer, expected about 7.30pm local time.

1324: Granollers gets back to level the second set 3-3. Juan Monaco has snatched the first set 6-4 against Radek Stepanek.

1305: Granollers took the first set against Fognini but the Italian is pleasing his home crowd with some good points in the second and has a 2-1 advantage with a break. Monaco is serving with serve at 3-4 against Stepanek.

1222: Good morning/afternoon/evening and welcome to Wednesday of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. Action in the men’s second round has just got underway and we have two matches out on court. Marcel Gronellers has the early advantage against Italian battler Fabio Fognini. Radek Stepanek is about to begin against Juan Monaco. Later in the day Messrs Federer and Nadal are in action.
