ATP Wednesday – as it happened

This content was published 11 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

2048: That will be that for Rafa. 6-1, 6-3 he triumphs and will play Gulbis next tomorrow afternoon. That wraps up the men’s action here at the Foro Italico today and we can be thankful the weather held. Join me tomorrow from late morning where I will bring you through third round day. Goodnight and ciao! 2037: Disappointment for Fognini and the crowd as Nadal weathers the storm and breaks again for 4-2. It’s suddenly got very quiet now. 2026: If there was a roof on Centrale, it would be raised. Fognini gives the crowd some rare delight breaking back Nadal’s serve. 2-1 to the Spaniard but Fognini is pumped. 2023: Ernests Gulbis, the qualifier, continues to march on. His fourth win of the week is comfortable, 6-1, 6-1 against Vikor Troicki. Gulbis will more than likely place Nadal next up. 2020: Fognini is getting frustrated now after losing his opening service game of the second set. 2-0 Rafa and already the finishing line is in sight for the Spanish left hander. Talking of Spaniards, Nadal could have a quarter-final against his compatriot David Ferrer in a repeat of last week’s match in Madrid. Ferrer has come through a tricky match against another Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, triumphing 6-3 in the final set. 2011: Looking like a demolition job now for Rafa who is playing some classy tennis. Fognini sent from left to right and it is first set in the bag for the defending champion, 6-1. 2000: Not the easiest game for Rafa, he has to save two break points but is already winning the longer rallies. A good start to this match by both players. 1955: Three big men’s matches out there now including Rafa Nadal v Fabio Fognini. And it is just the Rafa we know and love. A break straight away and he is now leading 2-1. Ferrer has won the second set 7-5 against Verdasco and that will go down to the wire. Ernests Gulbis has won the first set 6-1 against Viktor Troicki. And no sign of any rain yet. Fingers crossed. 1907: Ferrer is looking in danger. He has lost the first set 7-5 to Verdasco and the Spaniards are level at 4-4 in the second set. Very muggy now and dark. Rain expected but none yet. 1804: Pretty easy in the end for Kohlschreiber who won that one 6-4, 6-1. The German will play a Spaniard in the third round. Fernando Verdasco has got an early break over David Ferrer at 2-1. 1656: Just one men’s match on court at the moment and Philipp Kohlschreiber has taken the first set against Albert Ramos, stealing it with the Spaniard serving at 4-5. 1635: It’s been quite a day on Centrale. Two top ten players have played on that court and both have lost. Rafa Nadal must be quite fearful ahead of this evening’s clash with Fabio Fognini! Another seed out in the shape of Kei Nishikori who has been well beaten 6-4, 6-1 by Jeremy Chardy. It will be Chardy v Granollers in the third round. 1550: Dramatic stuff. Murray wins the tiebreak 7-5, fighting so hard to come back after being 4-1 down in the set. But then he retires! And there must be serious concerns over his French Open fitness now with his hip/back problem. Granollers will play the winner of Kei Nishikori and Jeremy Chardy in the third round. Chardy has broken for a 4-3 lead in that one on Supertennis. 1540: Second set tiebreaker now between Murray and Granollers. Will it be redemption for the Brit? 1532: Murray has broken back! His hopes are still alive. It’s now 5-5 and shaping up to be an exciting finish to the set. Thriller on Court 4 as Paire beats countryman Benneteau 7-4 in a final set tiebreaker. Del Potro awaits for the Frenchman. 1527: Just as it looked like Murray was turning a corner, Granollers snatches another break and will now serve for the match as the Brit nets at break point. 5-4 to the Spaniard. 1520: Murray breaks back for a second time. 4-4 it is now, he’s suddenly come to the party after a terrible first hour. 1512: One break back for Murray who reduces the arrears to 4-2 but was still not convincing in winning that game. 1506: Murray is back up but he loses two more games including a second break. 4-1 Granollers and the end appears nigh for the Brit. 1504: Simon is through winning in straight sets and will now face the daunting task of Roger Federer in the third round. 1459: Murray calls for an injury time out and appears to be receiving treatment on his troublesome back.  1456: But Granollers breaks back again and you have to say it is pretty poor tennis from Murray at the moment with more enforced errors putting him into trouble. 2-1 Granollers. 1453: Murray breaks back immediately but needs a lucky net cord at 30-30 to give him break point which he duly takes at the first attempt. 1-1. 1448: With light rain in the air, Murray is broken in the first game of the second set. That game lasted eight deuces and over 13 minutes but Granollers takes his chance and has the major advantage in this. Simon, having won the first set against Youzhny, has now broken for 4-3 in the second set. Paire has a final set break over Benneteau, 2-1. 1432: We’ve already had a shock with Tsonga’s upset. Is his travel companion Murray going out with him? The answer at the moment is yes as Granollers claims a surprise first set 6-3. 1422: It’s Andy Murray’s 26th birthday today but a far from happy one so far. Granollers has broken him to love with some poor shots into the net from the Brit. 4-2 Granollers. 1411: With serve so far on Centrale with Murray leading 2-1. Simon has turned things around against Youzhny and will now serve for the first set at 6-5. Benneateau won the first set on a ‘breaker against Paire but his French compatriot has broken in the second set for a 3-1 lead. 1358: It’s Andy Murray time. He’s had to wait all week for his first match but he is now taking on Marcel Granollers, a man he has beaten in both his previous two meetings. Plenty of cloud here now. 1340: Stan Wawrinka has withdrawn from the tournament due to a thigh injury. His opponent Alexandr Dolgopolov gets a walkover straight to a third round meeting with Novak Djokovic. 1337: Tsonga is out! A fine performance from Jerzy Janowicz and he takes his first match point with a fine passing shot at the second attempt after Tsonga storms to the net. Janowicz rips his shirt in delight. It is a sensational win for the Pole and you have to say he deserves it. Disappointment for Tsonga but he was second best. Janowicz will face another Frenchman in Richard Gasquet in the third round. 1330: A tiebreak will decide the second set between Tsonga and Janowicz and possibly seal the Frenchman’s fate. It’s not shaping up to be a good day for France so far with Mikhail Youzhny winning 4-1 against Gilles Simon.  1318: Apologies for the lack of updates on the ATP side of things, we have had a technical issue. Tsonga is struggling against Jerzy Janowicz, the up and coming Polish star has taken the first set against the Frenchman. It is a very competitive second set and as things stand the scoreline is 5-5. If Janowicz can see this through it would certainly be an upset. 1200: Good afternoon and welcome to live text updates on the ATP second round day at Foro Italico. Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga all start their campaigns today, although there is a likelihood of rain later on this evening. As ever tweet me please with any comments or questions to @ianbakersport.
