It was a good day for America on the first day of qualifying at the Foro Italico, because all five Americans who competed emerged victorious, each in straight sets. All five were from the women’s qualifying event with Lauren Davis starting the day well with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Eva Birnerova and Madison Keys clinching a 6-2, 6-4 success over Zhang Shuai. Mallory Burdette eased to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Petra Martic, Melanie Oudin beat Chanelle Scheepers 6-4, 6-0, Jamie Hampton claimed victory over Italian wildcard Federica Di Sarra.  Unfortunately for American interest, the luck of the draw will see at least two exit in the final qualifying stage on Sunday with Oudin playing Hampton and Keys taking on Burdette. Davis will play Mathilde Johansson who knocked out Olga Govortsova. Top qualifying seed Anabel Medina Garrigues was troubled against Italian wildcard Alexia Virgili but eventually came through in three sets while another seed in Anabel Medina Garrigues was troubled all the way before also coming through in three. Top men’s seed Lukas Rosol recovered from a horror start, losing the first set 6-0 to another home favourite in Flavio Cipolla, before winning in three. Ernests Gulbis of Latvia is safely through after winning in straight sets against Adrian Ungur while veteran Igor Andreev, troubled by injury this year, went down to Grega Zemlja.
