Home dreams ended

This content was published 12 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

The home fans may have enjoyed Paolo Lorenzi’s surprise win over Nikolay Davydenko in the main draw but it was a disappointing day for the Italians on final qualifying day as Saturday heroes Nastassja Burnett, Gianluca Naso and Marco Cecchinato all succumbed to defeat.

Burnett, who had beaten Johanna Larsson, came closest of the trio but fell to Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada, losing 6-4 in the final set.

Cecchinato (pictured) had caused a stir on Saturday night beating a player ranked nearly 500 places higher than him in Go Soeda. But the exertions of that effort clearly had an effect on him as Slovenian Blaz Kavcic progressed to the main draw with a win in three sets despite only being added to qualifiers at the last minute as replacement for Igor Andreev.

Naso fell to top seed Albert Ramos while there were plenty of long matches as players desperate fought for their main draw places. Sam Querry beat Mikhail Kukushkin while Robin Haase also triumphed up against Xavier Malisse.

Sloane Stephens, the highly-rated young American, is in the main draw of the women’s section with victory over Su-Wei Hsieh while Mirjane Lucic beat Gisela Dulko and Anastasia Rodionova got the better of Vera Dushevina.
