It was disappointment for Italy on the final day of qualifying for the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.  Both wild cards Gianluca Naso and Marco Cecchinato were beaten in straight sets by Ernests Gulbis and Santiago Giraldo respectively meaning that no home player has progressed from the qualifying event. The biggest surprise result in the men’s qualifying came when Andrey Kuznetsov beat top seed Lukas Rosol 7-6, 6-4. It was not such a good day for America in the women’s qualifying with Lauren Davis beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Mathilde Johansson. Melanie Oudin and Mallory Burdette progress after winning their all-American match-ups against Jamie Hampton and Madison Keys respectively. Daniela Hantuchova failed to make the main draw with a straight sets defeat to Simona Halep.
