World No. 4 Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia after qualifier Nicolas Almagro was forced to retire with a left knee injury just 24 minutes into their second round match.
Almagro, a former world No. 9, was trailing his compatriot 0-3 in the opening set when the injury occurred and despite seeking immediate treatment he was unable to continue.
Nadal, the seven-time former Italian Open champion, will now play the winner of the match between No. 13 seed Jack Sock and Jiri Vesely.
