Peng and Zheng takes women’s doubles title

Unseeded Peng Shuai and Zheng Jie secured their first title together, defeating no.3 seeds Yaroslava Shvedova and Vania King 6-2, 6-3 in windy conditions at the Foro Italico on Sunday.

The Chinese pairing survived three break points early in the set then broke Vania King’s first service game to love to make it 3-1. Another break, again on the American’s service, settled the first set at 6-2, just as it began to drizzle.

The conditions may have helped to swing the match back in the favour of King and Shvedova however and they were the ones who broke early in the second set. It did not last however – this time it was Shvedova who was broken to level matters at 3-3, and a further break enabled Peng and Zheng to seal the match against last year’s Wimbledon and US Open champions.

Zheng had already won Wimbledon and the Australian Open with Yan Zi, but this is the first major title that she has won with new partner Peng, with whom she hopes to secure gold at the London Olympics in 2012.

In the men’s doubles, Andy Roddick was forced to withdraw with a shoulder injury, meaning that he and Mardy Fish were not able to dispute the final. Fellow Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey therefore took the title, the second of their career.
