Schiavone and Stosur in potential rematch

This content was published 12 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

The draw for the women’s singles at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia could well provide a remake of last year’s Roland Garros final, with No.2 seed Francesca Schiavone and No.6 seed Sam Stosur pitted together in the same quarter.

There is plenty of tennis between now and this potential quarter-final however, with Australian no.1 Stosur (who was on hand to perform the draw on Saturday lunchtime) facing a potentially tricky adversary in the Round of 16, if seeding is respected, in the form of rising German star Andrea Petkovic. Schiavone meanwhile is in the same part of the bracket as Estonian big-hitter Kaia Kanepi.

Schiavone finds herself no.2 seed in the absence of the Williams sisters and Kim Clijsters, who are all recovering from various injuries. One person who has earned her spot however is Caroline Wozniacki, the world No.1 who is top seed here at the Foro Italico. She will also have her work cut out with a Serbian double-act blocking her way.  The Dane is set to meet Ana Ivanovic, who got her faltering career back on track with a semi-final appearance here last year, in the Round of 16 followed by 2008 winner and 2010 finalist Jelena Jankovic in the quarters.

Should the seeds all emerge unscathed from the earlier rounds (with no.1 – no.8 enjoying a bye), then the Round of 16 will be as follows:

Wozniacki – Ivanovic
Jankovic – Bartoli
Azarenka – Pavlyuchenkova
Sharapova – Peer
Radwanska – Kuznetsova
Li – Pennetta
Stosur – Petkovic
Schiavone – Kanepi
