This content was published 11 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

2122: That’s the end of our WTA coverage today. Thanks for your company and join us again from tomorrow lunchtime where we will bring you all the action from the quarter-finals. Goodnight and ciao! 2121: Stunning turnaround by Stosur as she wins the final set 6-1 to knock Kvitova out. What a bizarre match that was with fluctuations all the way. But Stosur is through to a quarter-final meeting with Victoria Azarenka. 2101: Stephens avoids the bagel but cannot avoid a heavy defeat. 6-2, 6-1 to Sharapova in one hour and 20 minutes. She writes ‘make a wish’ on the camera lens. No-one will wish to play her, especially not Sara Errani in tomorrow’s third round. Stosur has now broken again to lead 3-1. What a match that is on Pierangeli. 2056: Stosur straight back to level up at 1-1. I told you it was not over! 2054: Sharapova has broken down Stephens. It is 5-0 in the second set and it does not really look like a fair reflection of the American’s battling efforts. Maria has now entered the zone though. Meanwhile on Pietrangeli a break at the start of the final set for Kvitova who is now looking the more dominant player at the moment. 2045: It’s turned into a bit of a demolition job in the second set as Kvitova wins it 6-2. So a final set it is then. 2033: Kvitova’s response is immediate as she breaks in the first game of the second set and now leads 3-2. Sharapova won the first set 6-2 in the end but Stephens is keeping her honest so far in a gruelling opening couple of games of the second set. 2015: Stosur has stolen the first set with a break when Kvitova was serving at 5-6. Very close match that one. 2010: Sharapova responds to the setback in the only way she knows by breaking Stephens’ serve in the very next game. 4-2 now. 2005: That was not in the script at all. Sloane breaks back and it 3-2. Shaping it up to be an exciting affair on Pietrangeli. 5-5 now between Kvitova and Stosur. 1949: Maria will be thinking ‘anything Serena can do, I can do better.’ And that is certainly the way she is started her match with Stephens, breaking immediately for a 2-0 lead. Stosur has broken back and it is now 3-3 with Kvitova. 1937: The perfect start for Petra who breaks Stosur immediately. The score now is 2-1. Maria Sharapova is next on Centrale against Sloane Stephens and that match will begin shortly. Sharapova won their only previous meeting last year in Miami. 1915: Kvitova, the eighth seed, against Stosur, the ninth, promises much in terms of quality and it is about to begin. Kvitova has won all four of the pair’s previous matches. 1816: No women’s matches on court just now. The next one will be Petra Kvitova v Sam Stosur which will start around 7pm tonight on Pietrangeli. 1746: Another retirement as Morita pulls out while 6-1 and 2-0 down to Azarenka. The Belarusian will now play Petra Kvitova or Sam Stosur in tomorrow’s quarters. 1737: Serena wraps up victory over Cibulkova in an hour and seven minutes, 6-0, 6-1. She will face Suarez Navarro in tomorrow’s quarter-final. Victoria Azarenka has won her first set easily 6-1 against Morita and is 2-0 up in the second set. 1726: Cibulkova finally on the border but Serena continue to stroll. 4-1 she leads second set with two breaks. Victoria Azarenka is also two breaks up in the first set against Ayumi Morita. 1659: Serena bagels Cibulkova, 6-0 that first set in 30 minutes. Victoria Azarenka, who destroyed Julia Goerges 6-2, 6-0 late last night, wants another quick match. She has broken Ayumi Morita in her first game and then holds for a 2-0 lead. 1648: Serena not in the mood to mess about. 2-0 is now 4-0 with two breaks. Easy as you like thus far. 1633: Halep, the qualifier, has reached the quarters where she will play Jelena Jankovic. A fine win for the Romanian. 2-0 Serena on Supertennis. And another result in is Suarez Navarro’s straight sets win over Dominguez Lino to set up a possible meeting with Serena. 1631: Serena Williams has started her match with Dominika Cibulkova and it is, as expected, a good one. She break straight away for a 1-0 lead. Simona Halep will now serve for the match at 5-2 against Roberta Vinci. 1616: Halep has won the first set and also takes an early break in the second against Vinci. Carla Suarez Navarro is now a set and 4-1 up against compatriot Lourdes Dominguez Lino. 1538: One Italian may be through to the quarters but another is struggling early on. Roberta Vinci is 3-1 down to qualifier Simona Halep, who won the only previous meeting between the two on clay in Barcelona last year. 1525: Kirilenko cannot continue and she disappointingly has to retire with the knee injury. Not the way the home crowd would have liked to have seen Errani go through but she is through to her first quarter-final here where she will play Maria Sharapova or Sloane Stephens. 1506: Jankovic is through, an outstanding match lasting two hours and 40 minutes. The 2007 and 2008 champion came through her final game to triumph and knock out Li, last year’s finalist. Jankovic will face the winner of Simona Halep and Roberta Vinci which is the next match on Pietrangeli. Errani is cruising at present, 2-0 she is ahead in the second set and Kirilenko is now receiving treatment on what looks like her left knee. 1459: Yet more drama on Pietrangeli as Jankovic breaks Li for a 6-5 advantage. She will serve for the match for a second time. Can she do it this time? 1456: Kirilenko double faults at set point as Errani takes the first set 6-3 with two breaks of serve.  1452: Developing into a classic on Pietrangeli. Serving for the match at 5-4, Jankovic saves six breaks points but cannot save the second and Li breaks for 5-5. That match has lasted two hour and 28 minutes so far. Errani is now leading 5-3 on Centrale. 1437: Topsy turvy start on Centrale. Kirilenko breaks back for 2-2 but then Errani breaks the Russian’s serve again for a 3-2 lead. 1435: Jankovic needed 10 break points in one game to finally break Li’s resistance. Her next game is easier as she holds serve for a 5-3 lead. One game from the match for JJ. 1426: The big question on every Italian’s lips today is can Sara Errani end her nightmare sequence at her home tournament and finally make the quarter-finals? Well, there is optimism. She has won four out of her first five meetings with Maria Kirilenko and has the early break for a 2-1 lead. 1334: Too many errors for Li as Jankovic easily takes the tiebreak 7-2.  1324: Jankovic has had her chance, serving for the set at 5-4, she missed five set points and that helped Li break back. The Chinese now serving at 4-5. 1244: We have action in Pietrangeli. Jelena Jankovic is playing Li Na. An early break for the Chinese to make it 2-0 but Jankovic has recover well to get back on terms at 2-2. Matches between these two have been traditionally closely fought, Li 4-3 up on the head-to-head but this is their first match in four years. 1216: Good afternoon from Rome. The bad news: it has been raining. The good news: it has stopped and play is about to get underway. Keep me, and yourselves amused, in meantime by tweeting me with your thoughts on this year’s Internazionali BNL d’Italia to @ianbakersport.
