WTA Tuesday – as it happened

This content was published 12 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

2343: Serena’s done it. She holds her serve to love to won 6-2,6-3 and will now play Nadia Petrova tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for your company today and you will join us for another action packed day tomorrow won’t you?

2339: Serena’s bold attacking shots have allowed her to break at just the right time, to love. Serena to serve for the match at 5-3.

2324: You can rest easy Serena fans – she has broken back immediately, 2-2.

2321: Serena is wearing a more conservative blue top than her sister Venus earlier. But she has just been broken, that was not in the script. Voskoboeva has a 2-1 second set lead.

2304: Another break from Serena, and that’s the set, 6-2. Absolutely no fuss there, she’s in total control.

2253: The chat with her coach seemed to work to an extent as Voskoboeva has held serve twice. It’s 4-2 Serena. The winner of this match is due to be in action around 3pm tomorrow so will want to get this over and done with soonish.

2242: Serena is on no mood to mess about. 3-0 she leads and Voskoboeva has already called for her coach.

2223: It’s late, I know, but Serena vs Voskoboeva is about to begin. First meeting between the pair but anything other than a win for the American, who has come out to Dancing Queen, would be a major surprise.

1928: Knapp has clinched a 6-2 final set triumph over Vinci to complete the women’s matches on at the moment. There is an abudance of ATP matches to get through at the moment so Serena Williams vs Galina Voskoboeva could be on very late indeed as things stand. It’s due to start 9pm local time. That’s very optimistic with Murray v Nalbandian to finish and Djokovic v Tomic to play.

1918: Sara Errani is through in convincing fashion. After winning the first set 6-0, she was 3-0 up in the second with Timea Bacsinszky retiring. Meanwhile Knapp is 4-2 up in the final set in her all Italian duel with Roberta Vinci.

1842: Fine start for Errani who has a 3-0 lead on Supertennis Arena. Meanwhile Vinci has levelled up at a set apiece against Knapp.

1828: Italian woman are the subject of the hour right now. Sara Errani has just got underway against Swiss opponent Timea Bacsinszky. In the Italian match on a packed court 2, Karin Knapp won the first set but Roberta Vinci leads 4-2 in the second.

1804: A clench of the first from Venus confirms her victory against Simona Halep. 6-4 in the final set, breaking with the Romanian serving at 4-5. Another big step in her comeback although a disappointing first serve percentage of 41 is something to work on. Venus will face Ekaterina Makarova next up.

1747: Venus fighting hard. She’s back to 3-3 in the second, just three games from the match. This would be a good win if she can complete the job.

1722: Venus comes through the first set 6-3 but is immediately broken by Halep in the first game of the second. Petrova has completed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Hlavackova. She could face Serena next.

1659: Solid if unspectacular start for Venus who is finding her feet if we’re honest. Nevertheless she has a 4-3 lead with a break. Meanwhile Erakovic has completed a 6-3 win over Lisicki in the final set and will now face Chanelle Scheepers in round two.

1639: Venus is underway and the first thing to mention is her dress: a patterned brown and white top. It’s certainly unique. She broke Halep in the first game but the Romanian immediately broke back. But Venus has now forced a second break of serve and leads 2-1.

1625: Venus Williams time soon. The American is playing only her fourth tournament of the season and will start against Simona Halep in due course. Venus won a three set classic in a tiebreak only last week in Madrid remember. Nadia Petrova has taken the first set in her match with Andrea Hlavackova, 6-3 and has taken the early break in the second set too.

1557: Lisicki levels up at one set all after a nervy few games. 6-4 in the end she took it against Erakovic to set up an intriguing final set. One hour 48 minutes so far.

1537: Win for Dominika Cibulkova and it has been pretty straightforward indeed up against qualifier Mirjana Lucic, dropping just three games. An Italian awaits in round two be that Roberta Vinci or Karin Knapp.

1527: Joy for the Italian crowd as Pennetta recovers from a setback in the second to win the ‘breaker 7-3 against Kirilenko and with it the match. And it was literally a case of standing room only out on Pietrangeli let me tell you. After losing the first set tiebreaker Sabine Lisicki has broken the Marina Erakovic serve not once but twice in the second to lead 3-0.

1447: It appears to be a different story in set two on Pietrangeli. Kirilenko has fought back and has a 4-1 lead with two breaks of serve against Pennetta. Meanwhile it’s a topsy turvy match against big-hitting German Sabine Lisicki and Kiwi Marina Erakovic. 5-5 in the first, Lisicki has just broken back.

1424: It’s been an easy first set for Pennetta who took it 6-1 against Kirilenko. Not so easy for Sharapova but she has broken at 5-5, and now holds her serve to beat Christina McHale 7-5, 7-5. A real lack of fluency for the Russian today and I don’t think she enjoyed that victory much with only a wry smile at the end. Shazza could face Ana Ivanovic in round three.

1401: After battling back from 5-2 down, Jankovic has now been beaten, 7-4 in the tiebreak by Cirstea. Very frustrating. It’s with serve on Centrale with Sharapova serving at 3-4. Pennetta looks like she is continuing her good form over Kirilenko with the early 4-1 lead.

1335: The Italians are right behind their local players and it is no surprise to see Pietrangeli absolutely packed for Flavia Pennetta against Maria Kirilenko. There is reason for optimism for the crowd. Pennetta has a 5-2 lead in the head-to-head.

1332: Jankovic has fought back. It’s now 5-5 on Court 2. Over on Centrale, Sharapova and McHale are both struggling with their serves. A break each and it’s 1-1 in the second set.

1322: McHale into the net and a pump of the fist from Sharapova. The Russian has taken the first set 7-5 but she made heavy work of that against her battling American opponent. Talking of battling, Jankovic will need to produce every ounce of energy to get back into her match with Cirstea who is serving for the match at 5-3.

1312: Shazza may not be in convincing form but she’s fought back to make it 5-5 after a nearly an hour of clay court tennis. Victory for Petra Kvitova meanwhile and she is the first woman through to round three. Last year’s Wimbledon winner has won 7-5, 6-4 against the girl with arguably the longest name in tennis, Anastasia Pavyluchenkova.

1301: Sloane Stephens is through. She has beaten Anna Chakvetadze 6-4 in the final set. A real battle between two qualifiers there. American Stephens will face either Flavia Pennetta or Maria Kirilenko next.

1246: It’s been a bit of a disaster so far for Sharapova. McHale is easily the better player on court, Maria struggling to get to grips with her game and she is already trailing 4-1 in the first set. Jankovic is a set all with Cirstea.

1224: Kvitova has come through a scare to snatch the first set 7-5 against Pavlyuchenkova. We have the first result of the day: bad news for Italian fans as another one of their players has exited early with Alberta Brianti beaten by Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-2, 6-1.

1204: Jankovic has lost the first set 6-3 to Cirstea but she
has fought back in the second, 2-1 with a broke she leads. Also fighting hard is Chakvetadze who is 4-2 up in the second against Stephens having lost the first set. Kvitova is back to 5-5 with Pavlyuchenkova. We have the big one about to begin in Centrale with Maria Sharapova about to take on Christina McHale in her first match here since winning last year. Shazza has won the only time the pair have met before at the 2009 US Open.

1140: Good morning, buongiorno, and welcome to the women’s action at Foro Italico. This really is an action-packed day with the second round getting underway. It’s been busy on all courts so far. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is 4-3 up with a break against fourth seed Petra Kvitova while Sorana Cirstea has taken a 5-3 advantage against Jelena Jankovic in a first round match. In-form American Sloane Stephens has taken the first set against Anna Chakvetadze. Remember you can Tweet me @ianbakersport if you have any comments on any of the action.
