WTA Tuesday – as it happened

This content was published 11 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

2228: Thanks for your company today, join us tomorrow for another packed day here at the Foro Italico. Goodnight and ciao! 2226: That’s the win for Serena, 6-2, 6-2. She outclassed Robson in an excellent display. The Brit had to go for broke but was out powered by her more experienced opponent. Melanie Oudin or Dominika Cibulkova await next. 2220: The end is night for Robson after a double fault gives Serena 4-2. Too many unforced errors for the Brit tonight. 2206: The class is telling but Robson keeps Serena honest with a fine cross court to win another service game. 2-2. 2157: Robson recovers from 15-40 to win her first service game at the start of the second set and make it 1-1. 2148: Serena’s power and control is proving way too much for Robson now. The British No.1 is run ragged as Serena claims the first set 6-2. Fine recovery after a slow start from the American. 2137: Serena holds and then Robson holds too for the first time, an ace down the middle winning the game to love. 4-2 Serena. 2131: It’s now 3-1 to Serena as she breaks the Robson serve again. The world No.1 definitely has her A game out there tonight. 2123: Serena holds serve with a cracking crosscourt winner. 2-1 to the American. 2119: Robson’s joy is short lived as a couple of backhand unforced errors help Serena break straight back. 1-1. 2116: Stunning start for Robson who claims a break in the first game at the second break point. Game on! 2111: Here we go then, Serena to serve. 2057: They say it is best to save the best until last. And that is what we have here. Serena Williams, world No.1, against Laura Robson, the in-form world No.39. Robson put out Serena’s sister Venus yesterday. Can she put out another Williams today? It would certainly be a big shock, but I wouldn’t put it past her. Remember to tweet me any predictions or comments at @ianbakersport. 2000: A final first round result is in as Carla Suarez-Navarra wins a final set tiebreak to beat Nadia Petrova. Romina Oprandi will await in the second round. We will be back on the WTA live text service around 9pm when Laura Robson takes on Serena Williams in the final match of the evening. 1939: Shock result as fourth seed Aga Radwanska is beaten by qualifier Simona Halep in the second round with the Romanian winning 6-2 in the final set. That is Halep’s fourth win in four days and she will take a well-deerved rest on Wednesday before a match with an Italian on Thursday, either Nastassja Burnett or Roberta Vinci. 1857: Oprandi has eased to a sensational 6-2, 6-0 win over Pavlyuchenkova and will face the winner of Petrov and Suarez-Navarro which is now one set apiece. Simona Halep has hit back after losing a first set tiebreak to Aga Radwanska, winning the second set 6-1. 1817: Some updates on the few remaining women’s matches on the outside courts: Nadia Petrova has taken the first set against Carla Suarez-Navarro. Simona Halep, the qualifier, is serving at 5-6 against Aga Radwanska. And Romina Oprandi has a 4-2 advantage over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. 1712: Sloane Stephens has beaten Flavia Pennetta 6-3 in the second set. Good effort from the Italian as she briefly threatened a comeback from 5-1 down but the American was too strong and has set up a second round meeting with Kiki Bertens. 1646: Sad news Ana Ivanovic fans, she has lost the final set 6-2 to Urszula Radwanska. The Pole will now face Ayumi Morita in the second round. Sloane Stephens is now in cruise control over Flavia Pennetta. 4-0 the lead in the second set. 1635: Ivanovic now faces an uphill struggle to get back into her match with Radwanska (U), she is a break down with the Pole now at 4-1 in the final set. Yanina Wickmayer has comfortably beaten her countrywoman from Belgium Kirsten Flipkens in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. She will face Lourdes Dominguez Lino next. 1623: Stephens takes the first set and immediately breaks Pennetta in the first game of the second set. 1603: Petra Kvitova triumphs 7-5 in the final set recovering from a disastrous 6-0 hammering in the second set to Sabine Lisicki. She was able to change the momentum that was apparently against her and the eighth seed is the first female through to the third round where she will play Peng Shuai or Sam Stosur. Ana Ivanovic is level at one set apiece against Urszula Radwanska, a much improved performance to win the second set 6-2. 1556: It is shaping up for a thrilling conclusion for the second time today on Pietrangeli. Kvitova broke Lisicki for a 5-4 lead but the German breaks straight back. 5-5. On Supertennis Sloane Stephens has recovered from a slow start to win three games in a row and lead 3-1. Jie Zheng has beaten Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6, 6-3 and she will play countrywoman Li Na in the second round. 1547: Kvitova appears to have got her game and confidence back. It’s 4-4 in the final set. Ivanovic is another apparently on the mend with a 3-0 advantage in her second set. 1539: Better from Ivanovic who has broken Radwanska in the opening game of the second set having lost the first 6-3. More Italian interest on Supertennis with Flavia Pennetta, the world number 104, about to take on 16th seed Sloane Stephens. 1526: McHale has knocked out Knapp in fairly convincing fashion 7-5, 6-2, and can now look forward to a match-up with another Italian in the second round, against Sara Errani. Cibulkova won the final set against Mladenovic and will face qualifier Melanie Oudin in the second round. Kvitova’s nightmare losing sequence – seven games – has ended and it is 1-1 in the final set with Lisicki. 1517: What a second set! Kvitova is bageled as Lisicki produces some sublime tennis to level the match at 1-1. That set lasted less than 25 minutes, blink and you’ll miss it. Disappointing start for Ana Ivanovic. She is two breaks and 4-1 down now to Urszula Radwanska.  1506: Victory for Vinci who breaks for a 5-4 lead then serves it out with Vesnina netting a terrific final point into the net. That will be an all Italian second round between Vinci and Nastassja Burnett. Looking like an incredible turnaround on Pietrangi. Lisicki leads 4-0 in the second set against Kvitova. 1453: First set to Kvitova against Lisicki, 6-4, in just 33 minutes. Vesnina is up and running again but it is now 4-4. 1449: Just as I say that Vinci breaks back on Centrale and then Vesnina has treatment on what appears to be a thigh problem. 1446: Kvitova gets a break again against Lisicki and then holds for a 5-3 lead. Vesnina seemingly closing in at 4-2. Ana Ivanovic, one of everyone’s favourite players, is about to start out on Court 1 against Urszula Radwanska. 1440: Lisicki back on terms in the first set against Kvitova thanks to a double fault on break point from the Czech. 3-3, that one. Elena Vesnina has broken Roberta Vinci and now leads 3-1 in the final set on Centrale. That one has already gone on for over two and a half hours. 1428: Vinci may be battling away well on Centrale but it is less promising for another Italian in Karin Knapp who has lost the first set 7-5 to Christina McHale. Over on Pietrangeli, Kvitova has the advantage of an early break and 2-1 lead over Lisicki. 1415: Vinci snatches the second set breaking back the Vesnina serve immediately to win it 7-5. Final set on Centrale. Real turnaround on Court 3 with Cibulkova winning the second 6-2, having lost the first 6-1, to level up against Mladenovic. 1410: It seems as if Pietrangeli is the place to be today. Next up on that court is Petra Kvitova v Sabine Lisicki in the first of the second round matches. Lisicki, w
ho beat Mallory Burdette yesterday, is level at 1-1 with Kvitova in the head to head. 1404: Incredible win for Jovanovski, she just refused to give up. She was down 5-2 in the tiebreak but went on to win five points in a row for the match as Wozniacki skies at match point. Both players struggled with injury but it was an outstanding match, probably the best of the tournament so far. Reward for Jovanovski is Jankovic in the second round. Meanwhile Vesnina has struck back on Centrale to level the second set at 5-5 against Vinci. 1353: Wozniacki v Jovanovski will be decided by a final set tiebreak. It is tense on Pietrangeli. 1344: It is turning into quite an event on Pietrangeli. Wozniacki broke for a 5-4 final set lead but battling Jovanovski has came marching back into contention. It’s 5-5 and I can’t call this, can you? 1330: Sensational stuff from Jovanovski who is really struggling with her injury. But she has fought back from 4-0 to make it 4-3. Wozniacki still has the break though. Vinci now has a 3-1 lead over Vesnina in the second set on Centrale. And Kristina Mladenovic has stunned 14th seed Dominika Cibulkova racing to a 5-0 lead in the first set. 1327: Julia Goerges has come through a difficult match against Hlavackova with a 6-4 success in the final set. The German will take on Victoria Azarenka next. 1315: Jovanovski now has an injury with heavy strapping on her left thigh now. 1312: A second break for Wozniacki in the final set and she leads 3-0 now, Jovanovski making rather too many unforced errors now. Vesnina has claimed the first set 7-2 on the ‘breaker against Vinci. 1307: A topsy-turvy first set will be decided by a tiebreaker as Vinci breaks back against Vesnina. 1302: More like it for Wozniacki who has broken Jovanovski and then held for a 2-0 second set lead. Elena Vesnina has broken Vinci again for a 6-5 lead and will serve for the first set. 1255: Victory for Kirilenko 3 and 3 against Medina Garrigues. She will play Lepchenko next. 1249: Just as it looked like Wozniacki had the momentum, she has lost the second set, losing three games in a row including two breaks to Jovanovski. The Dane is not being helped by the heavy strapping around her ankle.  1240: First women’s result of the day is in. Lepchenko has knocked out qualifier Tsurenko 6-4, 6-2. The American will play Maria Kirilenko or Anabel Medina Garrigues in the second round. Julia Goerges has levelled up at a set apiece against another qualifier Hlavackova. 1238: Breaks, breaks, breaks. Wozniacki has taken a 4-3 lead against Jovanovski, overcoming her ankle injury so far. Vesnina breaks back for 3-4 on Centrale. 1233: Vinci has broken the Vesnina serve again and now has the 4-2 first set lead. Wozniacki and Jovanovski are level at 3-3. 1222: Perfect responses x2. Wozniacki has got her break back against Jovanovski. And on Centrale, Vinci has won the next two games, including a break, to lead 2-1 against Vesnina. 1213: Italian interest on Centrale but it is not the start the home crowd wanted. Russian Elena Vesnina, who holds a 4-1 head-to-head lead over 13th seed Roberta Vinci, has broken immediately for a 1-0 lead. 1212: Wozniacki back on court but she cannot save the break point. 2-0 to Jovanovski. 1207: Maria Kirilenko has taken the first set 6-3 against qualifier Anabel Medina Garrigues. Another qualifier Lesia Tsurenko has also lost the first set 6-4 against Varvara Lepchenko. 1206: Wozniacki in a spot of trouble, she is receiving treatment on that ankle injury she has had, at a critical time, serving at break point and 1-0 down in the second set. 1155: Wozniacki, watched by boyfriend Rory McIlroy, has won the first set, comfortably 6-2. Meanwhile qualifier Andrea Hlavackova is on the way to pulling off a minor shock, winning the first set by a similar scoreline against the German Julia Goerges. 1137: Plenty of matches got underway at 11am, and the big one on Pietrangeli has seen Wozniacki make the perfect start. She has two breaks against Jovanovski and leads 5-1 in the first set. The Dane has won both of the previous two meetings between the pair. 1124: Good morning and welcome to Tuesday’s play in Rome. We will see the completion of first round matches and the start of the second round. The big game is at 9pm local time where Serena Williams takes on Laura Robson. Before that we wil bring you coverage of the other matches including Caroline Wozniacki v Bojana Jovanovski and Petra Kvitova v Sabine Lisicki. As ever tweet me your comments and predictions to @ianbakersport.
