Tired Suarez Navarro happy with runners-up plate

Carla Suarez Navarro reflected on an outstanding week but admitted she just ran out of steam in the end after losing in a final set to Maria Sharapova.

The Spaniard claimed the runners-up plate but threatened an upset against the Russian after the winning the first set. But Sharapova claimed the second set 75 and the third 61 as Suarez Navarro’s fourth three setter of the week was in vain.

“It was a really close match, I know I need to start really good,” she said. “But I feel tired. I’ve been fighting all the time. At the  end of the second set Maria played more aggressive. I think that was the key. I said I was a little bit tired but I think I played good.

Suarez Navarro will now move into the world’s top eight but she insists that is a subject that does not worry her.

“I think it’s just a number,” she said. “You have to practice, work and learn every day if you want to be number one. I want to try to play like this the whole year which is more difficult to me.

“Maria plays really good not only on clay but on hard courts for sure, she plays really aggressive on hard court, she has good points, winners, stays in the match all the time. She is really good in her mind and she played really aggressive.”
