Vesnina hard work in vain

Elena Vesnina was the hardest working person in Rome on Sunday. The Russian played not just one match but two during the afternoon.

Vesnina’s first qualifying round match with Tatjana Maria was delayed as the German was playing an ITF event in Germany on Saturday.

Vesnina went on to beat Maria 1-6 6-4 6-0 but then found Alison Riske of America too strong in the final qualifying round bowing out 6-4 6-4.

Elsewhere Britain’s Heather Watson is through to the main draw after another hard-fought best of three match against Ana Konjuh of Croatia.

Other qualifiers include Julia Goerges of Germany who earned a straight sets triumph over Bethanie Mattek-Sands of America.
