LIVEBLOG: Auger-Aliassime, Carreno and Goffin in the second round

This content was published 3 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

18:30 – The order of play for tomorrow has just been released. Debut on the “Centrale” for Petra Kvitova and Jannik Sinner (third match against Frenchman Humbert). Not before 6pm, Camila Giorgi will face the Iberian Sorribes Tormo. Stefano Travaglia and Benoit Paire will open the Grand Stand Arena, followed by Fabio Fognini vs. Kei Nishikori (what a first round !!!), then the Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek. Not before 7pm, Musetti vs. Hurkacz, another big match. Tomorrow will debut also De Minaur (vs. Italian Mager), Cilic and Karatsev, newcomer of 2021.

18:15The first day of IBI21 ends here, but the training sessions at the Foro Italico continue. Right now, Novak Djokovic entered on “Centrale” alongside Lorenzo Musetti.

18:05Goffin is now in total control of the match. He has improved his serve, he is quick on his feet and hits very accurate forehands and backhands; especially down the line backhands. The Belgian leads 4-1: with 8 points in a row it’s 0-40 and triple Match Point! OK the second one, Game Set Match Goffin, a well deserved victory. He waits the winner of Delbonis vs. Khachanov first round match.

17:49 – The fourth game is very tough, many points, long rallies. Goffin saves two break points (one with the service) and moves forward 3-1.

17:34 – Caruso in trouble in the first game of the second!?!? Salvo can’t force his favorite tennis and collapses 0-40 at the opening game. He cancels the first two break point, but on the third he boosts an aggressive forehand that lands… wide. BREAK Goffin, 1-0. The match is now really uphill for the Italian…

Second Set, here we go!

17:27 – 40-15 the score, Goffin serves the first Set Point. Long rally on the backhand side and BOOOM, David fires a stunning backhand down the line, what a winner! SET GOFFIN, 6-4. Only 2 winners for the Sicilian in 44 minutes of the match.

17:23 – The first set continues to be a break “Festival”… 7 out of 8 games played so far! Caruso finally holds the first game on serve in the ninth game, the Belgian leads 5-4 and serves for the first.

17:15 – Goffin and Caruso begins with a series of breaks and counter breaks. The Belgian takes the very first lead, 4-1. Salvatore breaks David back, the score is 4-2… but then loses the service game again, for 5-2! Troubles for both of them in the service so far.

Caruso vs. Goffin to start!

16:25 – 5-1 Carreno, the first Match Point! A solid forehand, so accurate, pushes Djere to the last focerd error. GSM CARRENO, HE IS OUT THERE! A good victory for Pablo, who recovered after a complicated start with the medical time out.

16:15 Carreno is in control of the match. He leads the rallies with his feet closed to the baseline, pushing in control and serving good. No risk, great gain. Djere continues to grind his tennis but Carreno is more powerful and incisive. Ahead 3-1 and then 4-1 with a second break, Pablo is flying to the finish line.

15:58 – What a fighter PABLOOOO! He defends, runs and pushes hard even with his backhand, and no mistakes. He breaks Djere on the third chance, with a crazy defense. What a fighter the Spaniard. He leads 2-0, the match is in control.

Third Set, here we go!

15:45 – 6-3 CARRENO. The Spaniard capitalizes the break, conquered struggling in the sixth game, and secures the second set at the first Set Point. Djere sent a backhand into the net, played with poor energy. ZERO unforced by Pablo in the set, a terrific number that underline how his performance has risen in the set.

15:33 – Break Alert! Carreno finally pushes as hard as he can, he has found speed and power with the forehand. Djere is in trouble, for the first time in the match has to face break points. He saves 4, with good serves and consistency, but on the fifth he collapses making one of his rare mistakes. BREAK Carreno, who flies 4-2 and then 5-2.

15:17 – The second set goes on following the serve. This statistic is interesting: 60% of Djere’s forehands go to Carreno’s reverse. His tactics is clear: to push hard on the weak side of the rival. 2 all the score.

Second Set, Carreno to serve

14:57 – 6-4 Djere! The Serbian wins the first set, just the break at the opening game. So solid in his own service game: 86% of points won with his first serve, an excellent statistic for Laslo. Not the best Carreno Busta so far, but very consistent and continuous Djere, the classic player who does not “give you anything”.

14:40 – Medical Time Out for Pablo Carreno Busta: a back treatment at change court on 4-3 in the first. The Spaniard lies down in front of his bench and gets massaged (… with moderate force) by the trainer on his back, especially in the lumbar area and then also on the abdominal muscles on the right side. The modest intensity of his hitting from the baseline was a signal that something doesn’t work.

14:22 Off to a hot start for Laslo Djere! He breaks Carreno Busta immediately and leads 2-0 in the beginning. The Iberian struggled to pick up his best pace, even in the third game he offered a break point, but he saved for the 2-1.

13:54What a drama in the first match !!! FAA break Krajinovic, leads 5-3 one step away to secure the match… but the tension hits him again. Krajinovic break back, serves 4-5, but suffers the strength of returns and the hard hitting from the baseline by Felix. 15-40, TWO MATCH POINTS. Bravo and courageous the Canadian in the second: he opens the angle and fires a perfect forehand. Game Set Match Felix Auger Aliassime, 6-4 in the third. A match that could have won earlier and that had become terribly complicated for him.

13:37Krajinovic returns aggressively and gets two break points in the seventh game. Felix saves them with an Ace and then a terrible mistake in return from the Serbian. 4-3 Auger-Aliassime.

13:26Break and counter break at the beginning of the third, the match remains balanced, with more errors by both. 3-2 Auger-Aliassime the score, Krajinovic to serve.

Third Set

13:01 This is gonna be tough for Auger-Aliassime to overcome now. Up 5-4 in the 2st set and serving for the match, he loses his service game. The score is 6-6, Tiebreak Time. FAA moves up 5-4 with a perfect volley, but misses an easy forehand, hitting with poor balance. 5 all. High tension on the “Centrale”… and the tension hits strong Felix, who commits a bloody double fault! Set Point Krajinovic. Another unforced error (forehand) by Auger-Aliassime closed the set. 7-6 KRAJINOVIC. The match goes third.

12:13 – Krajinovic immediately loses his service in the second set, Auger-Aliassime is in control of the match, very confident in the rallies and with his serve. The Serbian has to speed up his tennis to get back into the match. 3-2 Auger-Aliassime the score.

11:49: With the momentum, Auger-Aliassime rallying to win the first set from a break down, 6-3 the score. Krajinovic has lost the best position form the baseline and does not find the counter move to stop the Canadian forcing with his forehand. Excellent Felix with the first serve, 74% of points won.

11:22Krajinovic suddenly raced into a 2-0 lead, but Auger-Aliassime breaks back to 2-2. Hard fighting from the baseline with high intensity of the rallies. The Canadian has moved his position near the baseline and is more aggressive with the forehand. Some good tennis on “Centrale”.
