Heather Watson took her hat off to Nastassja Burnett and promptly got her game firing again to dampen home hopes.
Italian Burnett appeared set to justify her wildcard selection as she led 3-2 with a break on serve at 40-0 in the final set. At that point Britain’s Watson dispensed with her cap and looked a different player as she eventually prevailed 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in two hours and 17 minutes.
Burnett’s outstanding comeback in the second set and start of the third had left Watson exasperated as she shouted at one point “what can I do?”. But she found her game in the nick of time and will next play Croatian Ana Konjuh who beat Yaroslaw Shvedova.
There was less good news for Watson’s compatriot Laura Robson who was beaten 6-4 6-2 by American Christina McHale. However Naomi Broady won in straight sets against Saisai Zheng.
German Julia Goerges was a 6-4 6-3 victor over Polona Hercog while Bethanie Mattek-Sand won an all American tie against Madison Brengle.
