Victoria Azarenka and Ashleigh Barty rallied from a set down to overcome Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Demi Schuurs and win their first team title at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.
The Belarusian/Australian duo needed just 71 minutes to find a way past the No. 8 seeds 4-6 6-0 [10-3] and exact revenge over the pair who had knocked them out of Madrid last week.
It was a second straight Rome title for Barty, who had lifted the trophy at the Foro Italico in 2018 with Schuurs, her opponent on the court today.
The unseeded duo had looked impressive all week, advancing through the draw without dropping a set and knocking top seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova out of the tournament in the semi-finals.
Azarenka and Barty started the final in equally impressive form, playing aggressively to race to a 3-0 lead before Groenefeld and Schuurs found their range and battled their way back into the match, winning five of the last six games to claim the early advantage.
That was to be the end of the Groenefeld/Schuurs challenge however, Azarenka and Barty reverted to their dominant ways, easing to a bagel second set and then cruising to victory in the tiebreak.
