Marco Berrettini and Marin Cilic progressed to the third round at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Wednesday, producing clinical performances to defeat Federico Coria and David Goffin respectively in straight sets.
Berrettini needed 81 minutes to navigate his way past the qualifier from Argentinian who put up a strong fight in the first set but was unable to keep pace with the No.4 seed in the second, falling 7-5 6-1 in the opening match on Court Centrale.
It was level pegging until the eighth game when Berrettini secured the first break of the match and served for the opener. Coria, the younger brother of Roland Garros finalist Guillermo, showed his fighting qualities however, immediately recovering the break and getting the match back on serve.
A second break of serve in the 12th game sealed the first set for the world No.1 and from then on he wasn’t troubled, some impressive serving helping him to a straight sets triumph.
The Italian will face either US Open quarter-finalist Borna Coric or wildcard Stefano Travaglia in the next round.
Cilic proved too strong for Goffin, upsetting the No.6 seed 6-2 6-2 in 71 minutes on Grandstand Arena. The Croatian, who reached the semi-finals here in 2018, won 88 percent of first serve points and hit eight aces as he levelled their head-to-head record at 4-4 and recorded his second victory over the Belgian at the Foro Italico.
Next up for Cilic will be Casper Ruud or local favourite Lorenzo Sonego.
