Matteo Berrettini booked his spot in the quarter-finals at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, edging a close encounter against compatriot Stefano Travaglia 7-6(5) 7-6(1) on Court Centrale.

The No.4 seed was in impressive form throughout the straight sets affair, his big forehand and booming serve were functioning well and as he began to find length with his backhand his confidence grew. He saved his best tennis for the two tiebreaks, emerging victorious when his opponent sent a forehand long on match point to seal his place in the last eight at the Foro Italico for the first time.

Berrettini didn’t have it all his own way however, Travaglia fought hard and the two players enjoyed some gruelling rallies. The Italian wildcard recovered from a break down in both sets – and saved a match point at 5-4 – but was unable to produce the goods in the tiebreaks, a few missed forehands proving the difference in what was a valiant performance from the world No.84.

Next up for Berrettini will be either former US Open champion Marin Cilic or Norway’s Casper Ruud.
