Granollers/Zeballos triumph at the Foro Italico

Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos battled their way through a close encounter against Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin 6-4 5-7 [10-8] to be crowned men’s doubles champions at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

The No.4 seeds needed one hour 43 minutes to find a way past the unseeded French pairing, who reached the 2019 Roland Garros final, and secure their fourth career team title and third of the year. The duo are the only pairing to have won multiple doubles title this year, they lifted back-to-back trophies in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro in February, and have a 16-1 clay court record in 2020 having also reached the final last week in Kitzbuhel.

Granollers is now a two-time doubles champion at the Italian Open, having also won the title with Marc Lopez in 2012. The Spaniard also reached the final here in 2015 (with Lopez) and 2017 (with Ivan Dodig).

Granollers and Argentina’s Zeballos had looked impressive all week. Although they hadn’t faced a seeded pair they overcame several notable teams such as US Open champions Mate Pavic/Bruno Soares and Dubai champions John Peers/Michael Venus on their way to the final before defeating Chardy/Martin in a nail-biting third set tiebreak to lift the trophy.

“I think this is one of the best moments in my career. You know, this tournament has a lot of history, and I watch it many, many years since I’m a little kid so this tournament is really important. Winning Rome is a huge thing for me, and for sure for Marcel too,” said Zeballos.
