Herbert/Mahut end title drought

Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut ended a 10-month title drought when they claimed victory in the men’s doubles final at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Sunday. The French pair rallied from a set down to defeat Ivan Dodig and Marcel Granollers 46 64 10-3 and lift their first trophy since Wimbledon last July.

The No. 4 seeds have had to battle through all their matches this week and the final was no exception. They saved match points in both their second round and quarterfinal matches and just edged through their semifinal and final in a match tiebreak.

Dodig and Granollers, who started playing together at the start of the year, won three straight games from 3-4 down in the opener to take the first set but Herbert and Mahut bounced straight back. They broke in the opening game of the second set which was enough for them to claim the set and level proceedings. A dominant performance in the tiebreak ensured the Frenchmen were crowned champions in Rome and added an eighth team title to their trophy cabinets.
