IBI23: Muchova saves MP to stun Trevisan

In one of the toughest and most exciting battles of these Internazionali BNL d’Italia so far, the Czech upsets the Italian number 1

Imagine one of the most iconic courts on the tour, packed until the very last centimetre of loud and passionate Italian fans. Add two talented players whose game complements each other’s and you will have the perfect set up for a classic battle in tennis. Martina Trevisan and Karolina Muchova battled their hearts out in this second-round match at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia that kept fans glued to this court for almost 3 hours.

At the end of an emotional roller coast, the Czech took the victory after saving a match point 3-6 6-3 7-5.

The match started with an early break in favour of Muchova, but quickly, the Italian got into her rhythm and imposed her tactics thanks to solid returning and smart serving. Taking all the power from a crowd that showed involvement from the first points, Trevisan played with the angles of her lefty forehand and read the intentions of her opponent well, when Muchova tried to take the net.

A high quality first set ended in favour of the 18th seed, who kept the momentum early in the second set and had multiple chances to take an important lead. After failing to convert the 4th break point of the set, two of them consecutively on 3-3, Trevisan felt the weight of the missed chance and her solid game suddenly vanished. Just as it often happens in tennis, the moment one player loses focus, the other uppers their level and so did Muchova.

One stunning winner after the other, the Czech won 24 of the next 26 points to win the second set and sit on a 4-0 lead in the decider.

But Trevisan and the crowd did not want the fight to be over: the Italian fought back the ghosts of the previous 15 minutes and out of the blue returned playing the brilliant tennis of the first set. Suddenly, the wind was behind Trevisan’s wings and the Italian built her way back point after point, until passing the Czech and winning a chance to close the match on her opponent’s serve. Muchova did not panic and when Trevisan sank a rather easy return on the match point, she started believing in her chances again. After holding for 5-5, the Czech managed to break the Italian and eventually held her serve to win what promises to be one of the most iconic matches of this edition of the Internazionali.
