Keys opens door to only third WTA Final

Madison Keys has made only her third WTA Final as the unseeded American got the better of third seed Garbine Muguruza. It has been quite a week for the world No. 24 who went into the tournament without any pressure and has enjoyed a run to the final.

Her joy at the end of a 7-6 6-4 triumph appeared to sum up a week that has given her immense satisfaction.

I think I played really well today,” she said. “You know, the first set was a struggle. We were both serving really well, and it’s always tough when you’re starting and stopping and things like that.

“I am very happy that especially in the last game I was able to keep my nerves under control and serve it out and win. It feels so good, so good. I’m really, really happy. You know, I’m just really happy that I’m kind of finding my form a little bit before the French Open, and hopefully I can continue tomorrow and walk out with a very big smile.”

It is Keys’ demeanour that has impressed this week and her attitude has seen her clinch a final berth against the odds.

“I think I have just really kind of focused on each point this week and not gotten ahead of myself,” she said. “I know that’s a lame answer that we always say, but really just focusing on each match and not making it bigger than a tennis match has been really helpful for me.”
