Konta downs Begu

No.7 seed Johanna Konta looked impressive as she recorded a convincing victory over Irina-Camelia Begu 6-0 6-4 to book her spot in the third round at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia for the fifth straight year.

Konta, who reached the final at the Foro Italico last year, was in commanding form from the outset, dominating the rallies by moving Begu from side to side, exposing her weaknesses and capitalising on her opponent’s poor form. The world No.13 raced through the first set 6-0 in 30 minutes.

The Brit went a double break up in the second before surviving a mini fightback from the Romanian qualifier, who recovered one of the breaks in the sixth game as she began to raise her level. Konta remained focused on the task in hand however as the next few games went with serve and then played three superb points from 15-30 down – including her 22nd winner on match point – in the final game to take the victory.

Rome has been a happy hunting ground for Begu in the past – she reached the semi-finals here in 2016 – but she couldn’t recreate that level today, struggling to keep pace with Konta and find answers to her shotmaking in what was the first meeting between the pair.

No.9 seed Garbine Muguruza will be Konta’s next opponent.
