The three men’s seeds in first round action – Gilles Simon, Grigor Dimitrov and John Isner – all made it safely through to round two although the first avoided a scare.
Frenchman Simon lost the first set to American Jack Sock 64 but then won the second set tiebreaker 72 and then took the third set 63.
It was more straightforward for Bulgarian Dimitrov who beat Jerzy Janowicz 63 76(4) and American Isner who got the better of Portugal’s Joao Sousa 75 63.
There was also a notable victory for Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber who beat Donald Young 64 61 while home fans were disappointed as Simone Bolelli lost 76(4) 76(5) to Austria’s Dominic Thiem.
The second round gets underway on Tuesday with seeds Stan Wawrinka, Marin Cilic, Novak Djokovic and Tomas Berdych all in action.
