Muguruza gets elusive first clay win of 2017

Garbine Muguruza recorded her first clay court victory since the Roland Garros final last June when she came back from a set down to defeat qualifier Jelena Ostapenko 26 62 61 in the second round at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

The Spaniard showed real fight as she bounced back from a disappointing opening set to secure her first victory since the Miami Open in March in one hour 47 minutes.

Although the No. 3 seed had been struggling to find her form on clay this season, falling in her opening round matches at both Stuttgart and the Madrid Open, Muguruza always believed her level was there and it was only a matter of time until the standard of tennis she was producing in practice would transfer to the match court.

“I’m practicing well. I’m trying to practice actually a lot, and I think my level is there. It’s just finding the right moment and to do the same on the match, because sometimes can be different,” said the No. 3 seed before the tournament.

Muguruza will face Julia Goerges in the third round on Next Gen Arena not before 4pm on Thursday.
