Former Roland Garros champion Garbine Muguruza was among the first round winners on Monday at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.
The current world No. 19, a two-time Italian Open semi-finalist, recorded her first victory since lifting the trophy at Monterrey last month with a 6-3 6-4 triumph over Zheng Saisai, her third straight sets win over the Chinese player this season.
“It was a slow start but I’m happy because last week wasn’t a good week for me,” Muguruza told the WTA website. “I love Rome and it is very important for me to get as many matches as I can for the Grand Slam at the French Open.”
There were also victories for Britain’s Johanna Konta, who dropped just five games as she cruised past Alison Riske, and former world No. 4 Dominika Cibulkova, who afforded her opponent Aliaksandra Sasnovich the same number of games as she recorded a 6-2 6-3 triumph over the Belarusian.
Cibulkova’s compatriot Victoria Kuzmova was in dominant form as she ousted Sara Errani, who required a wildcard to enter the tournament due to her ranking of No. 284, 6-1 6-0 while 23-year-old Katerina Siniakova, the top seed in the doubles this week with countrywoman Barbora Krejcikova, upset No. 15 seed Wang Qiang 1-6 7-5 6-4 in the first match on Court 2.
