Lorenzo Musetti came out on top in the battle of the Italians in the final round of qualifying for the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, prevailing 6-1 5-7 6-3 over his compatriot Giulio Zeppieri.
The 18-year-old world No.249, held his nerve in the final set to take victory from Zeppieri, his friend and rival, who he also defeated on his way to lifting the trophy at the 2019 Junior Australian Open.
Musetti will face Stan Wawrinka in the first round in what will be just his second ATP Tour-level match. As a qualifier he lost to Andrey Rublev in the first round at Dubai earlier this year in his only other Tour-level event.
Also qualifying for the main draw was Musetti’s compatriot Marco Cecchinato, the former Roland Garros semi-finalist, who dropped just three games as he eased past Jozef Kovalik 6-2 6-1. The former world No.16’s first round opponent will be Britain’s Kyle Edmund.
Top seed Tennys Sandgren recorded a 6-3 6-0 triumph over No.9 seed Joao Sousa to set up a clash against Salvatore Caruso. It was not the end of Sousa’s tournament however as the Portuguese player was drawn as a lucky loser and will take on John Millman in the first round.
Federico Coria made light work of Damir Dzumhur, dispatching the world No.114 6-1 6-1 in 72 minutes to ensure he advances to the main draw where he will face Jan-Lennard Struff.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Facundo Bagnis and Pedro Martinez also secured spots in the main draw after they defeated No.15 seed Corentin Moutet, Mikael Ymer and Andrej Martin respectively in straight sets. Waiting in the wings for the trio are 2019 Monte Carlo finalist Dusan Lajovic, No.9 seed Rublev and USA’s Sam Querrey.
The remaining qualifier spot was awarded to Dominik Koepfer who battled back from a set down to defeat Mikhail Kukushkin 2-6 6-4 6-2. The German’s first round opponent will be Alex De Minaur.
