Kevin Anderson and David Goffin both progressed to round two at Foro Italico as the main draw of the Italian Open kicked off on Sunday.
Goffin, the 12th seed, had to survive a scare though as he came from behind to win a memorable match 2-6 7-6(8) 6-3 against Leonardo Mayer of Argentina.
Anderson, the 16th seed from South Africa, had no suggest trouble and he was the first name in the second round, other than those who had successfully earned byes. Anderson needed less than an hour and a half to progress 6-4 7-6(5) against Spain’s Feliciano Lopez.
Bernard Tomic retired just eight minutes into his contest against Benoit Paire with apparent illness.
In qualifying, the highlight of the day appear to be a battling 1-6 6-3 6-3 win for Italian Filippo Volandri against the vastly experienced Radek Stepanek.
