Serena Williams needed just one hour and three minutes to comfortably beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova setting up a potentially mouthwatering contest on Thursday for the Italian home crowd.
If Sara Errani beats Christina McHale on Wednesday it will set up a re-match of last year’s final which the American won 63 60 with the Italian suffering with injury. It would also be a repeat of the close run Fed Cup match between the two last month.
“Sara’s playing really well, she’s consistently playing good,” said Serena after she had beaten Pavlyuchenkova 61 63. “We had a really tough match in Fed Cup and I look forward to hopefully playing here gain.”
“It went pretty much my way. I’m OK and happy to get through that. It just clicked and I can see where I have to improve the next 10 days.”
Elsewhere Jelena Jankovic provided disappointment for the Foro Italico coming through a closly-fought match with Camila Giorgi but eventually prevailing 75 75.
