It may have been a routine evening for Serena Williams but she was still delighted to come through 6-4 6-3 against Anna-Lena Friedsam in one hour and 15 minutes.
The American was pleased with the way she responded following a recent bout of illness and was happy with how comfortable she looked on clay.
“It felt good,” said the world No.1. “I love the clay, and it just really felt good out there tonight. It wasn’t an easy match, and she’s an up-and-coming player and she plays well.
“I can see her improvement from when I played her last year and between this year. So when I saw that I played her, I knew that I have to be really focused for my very first match.
“To be honest I was really happy with my level. I think I was really consistent. I think I was mentally consistent. I started out fast. Those are some of the things I wanted to work on. Yeah, I was really happy about that.
“I felt good (after the illness). I felt really good. I was really concerned how it would be just running and moving and recovering. But it was fun.”
