Siniakova takes out Kerber

This content was published 4 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

Katerina Siniakova provided a shock result at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia when she upset former world No.1 Angelique Kerber 6-3 6-1 in 68 minutes in the first match on Court Pietrangeli.

Siniakova was in impressive form from the beginning, particularly on the backhand side, whereas Kerber was erratic. The German struggled with her movement as well as her consistency and produced too many cheap errors.

A single break in the sixth game of the first set was enough for the Czech to take the opener and then five games in a row in the second put the former world No.1 doubles player in a commanding position. Kerber, the No.15 seed, showed brief signs of a resurgence by saving three match points and breaking back but she relinquished her serve in the very next game to ensure Siniakova took victory.

The win ended a run of four straight losses for the world No.61 and sets up a second round encounter against one of two former top 10 players, either qualifier Daria Kasatkina or wildcard Vera Zvonareva.
