Sunday in Rome was a sweltering day but that did not stop the women engaging in lengthy matches in the battle to make the WTA main draw.
Six of the eight qualifying matches resulted in three setters with Russian Elena Vesnina one the first to come through such a contest early in the day with a 46 62 75 victory over top seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
Lauren Davis was another to come through such a closely-fought match as she got the better of American compatriot Christina McHale 57 61 64.
Katerina Siniakova, Daria Gavrilova, Bojana Jokanovski and Alexandra Dulgheru also came through three setters while with little respite with the first round matches due to take place on Monday, Misaki Doi and Urszula Radwanska will have been relieved to get through their matches in straight sets.
